A New Chapter at The Teen Spot: Introducing Our Book Club

Sep 23
2 min read

Our first book is Wendy’s Ever After by Julie Wright, and we've put together something special for our first three readers.

We're starting a Book Club at The Teen Spot! And because we can't seem to do anything without turning it into an entire experience, we've gone a little beyond handing the kids a book and telling them to read it.

Our first three members will receive personalized starter bags filled with their books, journals, colorful pens, highlighters, snacks, and a few other surprises to get them started.

We've even included a little scroll introducing the story and explaining what they should know before opening the book.

Our First Read: Wendy's Ever After

We're kicking things off with Wendy's Ever After by Julie Wright, a reimagining of the classic Peter Pan story.

Our readers don't need to have read Peter Pan to enjoy it. We'll explore the story together, talk about the characters, share our opinions, and see where the adventure takes us.

And we have a few surprises planned along the way.

More Than Just Reading

We want Book Club to be something our teens look forward to, not another assignment they have to finish.

We'll start with a special kickoff at Harvest Moon Coffee Shop, where our readers can get together before diving into the story.

From there, reading will take place right here at The Teen Spot. Everyone will have their own copy of the book, which we'll keep at the program so it's always ready when they are.

We've tucked four checkpoint cards throughout each book. As readers reach different points in the story, they'll find journal questions encouraging them to think about the characters, make predictions, and share their opinions.

Each checkpoint also comes with a little surprise from our staff.

And when everyone reaches the final checkpoint, we'll save the ending to read together.

A Little Celebration at the End

Once we've finished the book, we'll celebrate with a movie night!

Our readers will also receive a special completion bag, including a gift card, as a thank-you for participating and seeing their first Book Club adventure through to the end.

Starting Small

We're beginning with just three readers so we can give each young person plenty of attention and make this first experience special.

As we learn what our teens enjoy, we'll use their feedback to help choose future books and plan new Book Club experiences.

We hope this becomes another way for our young people to discover new interests, express themselves, build friendships, and find something they genuinely enjoy doing.

And who knows? We might even convince a few kids who swear they hate reading to give it another shot.
